Concern in the British market over anti-tourism protests in Mallorca

Should British tourists be concerned about anti-tourism protests in Mallorca?

Recent anti-tourism protests in Mallorca have sparked concern among British tourists, generating a wave of cancellations for the summer season. However, is the situation really dangerous or has the scale of the events been exaggerated?

The British newspaper The Independent publishes today an article about the demonstrations against mass tourism in Palma de Mallorca, amplified by the UK media, creating a distorted perception of reality.

The Spanish Tourism Office has insisted that these protests, although legitimate, have been peaceful and do not represent a danger to visitors.

The reality behind cancellations: Alquilair's perspective

Pepe Pont, CEO of Alquilair, points out in The Independent article that while there has been an increase in British tourist cancellations, with a rate of 14% in 2024, this percentage has been constant over the last five years, with the exception of 2023. Beyond cancellations specific to the UK market, Pepe notes that cancellations have increased across the board for all nationalities, coinciding with media coverage of the protests.

Despite this trend, occupancy at Alquilair establishments and other accommodations on the island remains high, a fact that will be reflected in upcoming official statistics from the local government. This indicates that, despite the negative perception created, most visitors continue to enjoy a safe and pleasant experience in Mallorca.

The importance of maintaining perspective

It is crucial for tour operators and tourists to remain calm and assess the situation with a balanced perspective. While the protests have generated concern, the reality is that they have not significantly affected the safety and hospitality that characterizes Mallorca. The Spanish Tourist Office has stressed that tourists are still welcome and that travel to Mallorca remains safe.

What can we expect in the future?

The situation in Mallorca is a reminder of the importance of addressing tourism concerns in a balanced and responsible manner. As local and national authorities work to find solutions to the challenges posed by mass tourism, it is essential that visitors and operators continue to work together to maintain Mallorca's image as a welcoming and safe destination.

At Alquilair, we remain committed to providing an unforgettable experience for our guests, ensuring that, regardless of the circumstances, their stay in Mallorca is as pleasant and safe as possible.
