The vacation rental barometer in 7 points

Tourist housing has generated an economic impact in Spain of some 4,300 million euros in the last two years, of which 3,408 million were spent on leisure and food during the stay. This is one of the most important results emerging from the study that the University of Salamanca carried out for the HomeAway platform, the II Barometer of Holiday Accommodation in Spain. The results made clear the positioning and growth of vacation rentals.

The results of the holiday accommodation barometer

  1. Complementary accommodations. A total of 5.9 million Spanish travelers between the ages of 18 and 65 have stayed in both a hotel and a vacation home at least once in the last two years, while 1.1 million have opted exclusively for a tourist home.

  2. 97% of rental housing guests have had no problems with neighbors, compared to 96.8% of hotel users.

  3. Families and couples are the star clients of tourist homes. The former represent 45.9% and the latter 30%. In the case of hotels, couples predominate with 52%.

  4. Travelers who only stayed in tourist accommodations spent an average of 141.31 euros, and those who combined tourist accommodations and hotel 125.23 euros.

  5. The average stay in a tourist home is 6.03 nights with a group of 3.98 people, compared to 3.61 nights and 2.83 people on average in hotels.

  6. In the event that the destination does not have available tourist housing, 43% of the users would change location in order to find it. A 24% would stay in the same destination and look for another form of accommodation.

  7. More than a third of the respondents who stayed in both tourist housing and hotels posted comments about the accommodation on the Internet. The housing had 2.33% of negative comments and the hotels 3.93%.
